Braces For Dogs

Puppy’s orthodontic treatment goes viral

After a discussion with a lovely patient regarding using an electric toothbrush to clean her dogs teeth, I was fascinated to read an article regarding a puppy having orthodontic treatment!

The golden retriever from Michigan was taken into Harborfront Hospital for Animals after his owner noticed that his new adult teeth were leaving him unable to close his mouth and causing him to lose weight.

The solution? Dog braces. Jim Moore, a specialist in veterinary dentist who fitted the braces, admitted that this was an “unusual technique” but was the best way to correct the puppy’s malocclusion. “We don’t place braces or any oral appliances in the mouth for aesthetics,” he said. “We do this for pain or function.”

The hospital added in a statement on their Facebook page: “Wesley needed tooth alignment because he could not close his mouth completely. The good news is, the correction he needed will be brief, perhaps only a few weeks.”

However, they did not expect the public response that followed, saying that they were “overwhelmed by the outpouring of care and interest” in response to the photos of Wesley.

“Dental care is just as important for the pets we love as it is for us and we are glad that his cute brace face brought such interest.

“He is happily enjoying some of the benefits of his celebrity (although he already had ample hugs, kisses and belly rubs)

“Most importantly, he is eating well, playing, and feeling wonderful.”
