Considering Implants In Cheam?

11th February, 2016

If your thinking about having dental implants fitted in Sutton you may want to know abit more information about whats involved to put your mind at ease. Implant surgery is a routine undertaking, causes very little discomfort and in trained hands has a very high success rate. Dental implants have gained a popular reputation for their life-like appearance and longevity. Much of this is due to the titanium post embedded in the jawbone. Titanium has a natural affinity with bone, new cells will grow and adhere to the dental implant over time, making their connection strong and durable.

Implant surgery is a relatively minor procedure, mainly because all the placement details are often mapped out ahead of time. For complex situations your dentist can use x-ray or CT imaging to determine the exact location for each implant and create a surgical guide to use during the procedure to make incisions and create the small channel that will hold the implant.

Implantation is usually easier than tooth extraction if you’re healthy enough for that procedure you should have no problem undergoing implant surgery. With a local anesthetic, your dentist will numb only the implant site and surrounding tissues while you remain conscious. If, however, you have any anxiety your dentist can also include a sedative or anti-anxiety medication before proceeding.

Thanks to the pre-planned surgical guide and advanced implantation techniques, there’s very little tissue disruption and incised tissues are normally stitched with self-absorbing sutures. While some cases may require stronger pain relievers, most of the time a mild non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug such as aspirin or ibuprofen is sufficient for discomfort afterward. After bone integration your dentist will attach the permanent like-like crown, and you’ll be ready for many years of full function and a confident smile.

What is a Dental Implant

A dental implant ’tooth’ is made up of three main components: firstly, a small titanium screw that is inserted into and fuses with the jawbone; secondly, a post which attaches to the screw; and thirdly, a crown that fits over the post to provide a natural looking tooth that functions well.

Dental implants can be used to replace an individual tooth, or a full set of teeth, both to the top and/or the bottom of your mouth.

The Dental Implant process itself will involve at least one operation. You need to be in good general and oral health, have healthy gum tissues that are free of periodontal disease. You must also have adequate bone in your jaw to support the implant. Typically a single implant can support one or more replacement teeth and should you wish to replace all of your teeth with implants then this would require at least six implants in your upper jaw and between four and six in your lower jaw

Placing Implants is done in three stages

1 – Planning Phase- Your first step entails a consultation with your Dentist and an Implant Reach Dental Surgeon. We will describe the method and course of the planned treatment, to see if you qualify for an implant.

2 – Surgical Phase- Just like any other surgery, your dentist will review your medical history, current medical conditions and any medications you’re taking. Before the surgery you will have 2D or 3D X-rays taken and a precision surgical guide made, to ensure a quality treatment. Your surgeon will then place the first part of your implant with or without sedation, depending on your medical situation.

3 – Restoration Phase- Because your teeth experience extreme pressure, especially when you chew, your jawbone and gum tissue need to be strong to support the implant and ensure success. Depending on your situation, the final implant could be placed on the same day. However, most patients have to come back after a period of healing (approximately 6-12 weeks). You will have a temporary tooth fitted in the meantime.
